In the opening ODI of the World Cup for India, Virat Kohli smashes Sachin Tendulkar's two records with a amazing  85 against Australia...

When great all-rounder Kapil Dev saved the Men in Blue from giant-killing Zimbabwe in 1983 with one of the most famous World Cup knocks in history, India was facing certain defeat. India was five behind with a score of 17 in the 1983 World Cup thanks to the opening duo of Sunil Gavaskar and Kris Srikkanth dying for ducks. A rare batting collapse occurred for Team India, led by Virat Kohli, forty years later, when openers Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan, who failed to begin their individual innings against Australia, duplicated the unfavorable feats of Gavaskar and Srikkanth.

In front of a crowded Chepauk, Kohli and Rahul saved the Indian innings as the country was on the verge of an embarrassing collapse akin to that of the 1983 World Cup. Although Rahul and Kohli fell short of century, the top hitters finished the job with their stunning innings. Kohli hit 85 from 116 balls to reach new heights in his legendary career, while Rahul scored an undefeated 97. At Chennai's MA Chidambaram Stadium, the 34-year-old delivered a record-breaking performance for the Men in Blue, breaking both the Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar and Anil Kumble records.

For the World Cup, Kohli caught 15 balls, breaking Kumble's record. The run machine now owns the record for the most catches made by an Indian during an ODI World Cup. Then, when Rohit and company were reduced to 2-3 in 1.6 overs, batsman Kohli saw India falter in its attempt to chase down the run total. India was up against it, but Kohli played up to his nickname as the "chasemaster" by playing a game-changing knock against the five-time world champions.

*Kohli registers his highest score in successful run chase at World Cup

Mitchell Marsh, the first Australian opener to be bowled for a duck against India in an ODI World Cup match, dropped Kohli for 12, becoming the first batsman to do so. India was in danger of losing when Kohli produced a magnificent performance to punish Australia for their expensive error. The former captain of India hit six fours in his outstanding performance. This was Kohli's first 50-plus score in a World Cup winning run chase.

*Tendulkar's twin records shattered by Kohli

In the 2023 World Cup, Kohli broke a previous record by scoring more runs in successful chases than any other batter in ODI cricket history. The seasoned player has surpassed batting legend Tendulkar to take the title of world record holder. Kohli has 5,517 runs in 92 innings and Tendulkar has 5,490 runs in 124 innings when it comes to successful chases.

By breaking Tendulkar's record for the most runs scored by an Indian in white-ball ICC competitions, Kohli also succeeded in passing him. In 61 games, Master Blaster Tendulkar amassed 2,719 runs, while Virat Kohli just passed the 2780-run threshold. Kohli, who has amassed 13,000 ODI runs the fastest, needs two more centuries to tie Tendulkar's all-time record.
