Shubman Gill overcomes Hashim Amla and Babar Azam to become the quickest to a fantastic ODI record

Shubman Gill, the opener for India, broke the previous record for the fastest hitter to score 2,000 runs in ODI cricket during the World Cup match against New Zealand. Compared to Hashim Amla of South Africa, who needed 40 innings to reach the same milestone, Gill completed it in just 38 innings. The 24-year-old Gill has so far scored six hundreds and ten half-centuries in 37 ODIs for India. He failed to capitalise on his promising start against New Zealand, as the youthful player was removed after 26 pitches.

Gill's moment of triumph came in the seventh over of India's run chase against New Zealand when he decisively sent a ball from Trent Boult over the boundary, needing only 14 runs to complete this massive achievement. Although the young batsman may have lost the chance to make a significant score in the match, his amazing progress in ODI cricket, particularly this year, has been remarkable. The youthful player has 1325 runs to his name in 25 games, making him the year's leading run-scorer.

It's important to remember that Gill had a difficult start to the 2023 World Cup because of a case of dengue sickness, which caused him to miss India's opening two games against Australia and Afghanistan. In a major match against Pakistan, when he managed to score 16 runs, he made a return.

Earlier in the match, Mohammed Shami, another star from India, made World Cup history by becoming the first Indian to capture two five-wicket hauls in the competition. Shami finished with a 5/54 against New Zealand, which is impressive given that it was the bowler's maiden World Cup encounter after starting four straight games on the bench.

Shami has also eclipsed Anil Kumble to capture third-most wickets in ODI World Cups for India.

India knocked the Kiwis out for 273 thanks to Shami's brilliant effort, despite Daryl Mitchell's solid century (131) and Rachin Ravindra's valiant innings (75).
