Legendary Indian spinner Bishan Singh Bedi passes away at age 77

On Monday, famous spinner and former India captain Bishan Singh Bedi passed away at the age of 77. Bedi had deteriorating health over the past two years, and during that time, he underwent multiple surgeries, including a knee operation about a month ago. His wife Anju and their two children, Neha and Angad, are still alive.

"The BCCI mourns the tragic passing of great spinner and former India Test Captain Bishan Singh Bedi. His family and supporters are in our thoughts and prayers during these trying times. May his soul rest in peace", the Board of Control for Cricket in India wrote on its X page.

One of India's most renowned cricketers, Bedi played in 67 Test matches over the course of a 12-year career from 1967 to 1979. The most deadly spin bowling four in Indian cricket history, which included Bedi, Erapalli Prasanna, BS Chandrasekhar, and S. Venkataraghavan, transformed the sport throughout the world.

In addition to leading India in 22 Test matches and participating in India's first-ever ODI against East Africa in 1975, Bedi, who won the Padma Shri award in 1970, bowled 12 overs in which he struck eight maidens, conceded six runs, and claimed one wicket. The best left-arm spinner in the game is generally regarded as Bedi.

"Bishan Singh Bedi ji, a bowler who will always be remembered with affection and a former captain of the Indian cricket team, is no longer with us." Anurag Thakur, Union Sports Minister, told ANI, "It's a really unfortunate news and a great loss to the world of cricket."

"He organised a number of training courses at Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh. He used to remain in the Indian dressing room when this stadium was in use. He would remain here and get the guys ready. He has always had fantastic relationships with Punjab and Delhi, but he also had a special place in his heart for Himachal. The entire family deserves our condolences."

In 1969–1970, Bedi faced Australia in his first Test match and ended the series with 21 wickets. There was also no turning around. Bedi was really one of the best spinners of all time after taking 25 wickets against England, 18 against West Indies, 22 against England, and 25 and 31 again against England and Australia.

In the Ranji Trophy, Bedi was a veteran for Delhi, helping the team win back-to-back championships in 1978–79 and 1980–81. Additionally, Bedi became a legend in County cricket, where he played 102 First-Class matches for Northamptonshire and took 434 wickets from 1972 to 1977.

Following Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi as captain of the Indian squad in 1976, Bedi was named to the position. His first victory as captain came in the third Test of the gruelling West Indies series in 1976 in Port-of-Spain, where India led a record-breaking fourth-innings total of 406 that cemented their place in history. India's domination continued after this overwhelming victory, which led to a home series victory against New Zealand by a score of 2-0. Nevertheless, despite these encouraging beginnings, Bedi's position would finally be eliminated, and Sunil Gavaskar would take over. This was due to a string of difficult Test losses to England, Australia, and Pakistan.
