Mohammed Shami becomes the first Indian to make history in the World Cup with a fifer against New Zealand

Due to Hardik Pandya's injury, Mohammed Shami, who had started the first four games of the 2023 World Cup on the bench, was given the chance to play when India played New Zealand in a crucial group stage match in Dharamsala. Shami secured a fantastic five-wicket haul, becoming India's first in the 2023 World Cup, and the outcome was nothing short of extraordinary. His effort earned him a place in history as the first Indian bowler to have two five-wicket hauls in ODI World Cup history with his statistics of 5/54 in 10 overs.

Siraj's early removal of Devon Conway gave India a good lead in the game. In the ninth over of the innings, Shami was brought in as the first change bowler. In a high-stakes tournament like the World Cup, players typically require some time to regain their rhythm after sitting on the bench. Shami, however, bucked the odds. He removed Will Young's stumps in his opening delivery of the game, decisively establishing India's position.

While Daryl Mitchell (131) and Rachin Ravindra (75) did succeed in reviving New Zealand's innings with a strong 159-run stand, Shami ultimately ended this vital partnership. When Ravindra tried to cross the boundary in the 34th over but couldn't quite time it, Shubman Gill at long-on took a catch. Shami had delivered a length delivery to Ravindra.

With Shami dismissing Mitchell Santner and Matt Henry in quick succession in his last over of the innings, it was all India against New Zealand from that point on. Shami managed to take the crucial wicket of centurion Mitchell in the last over of the innings, completing his five-wicket haul despite falling short of a second World Cup hat-trick.

With his fifer, Shami became the first bowler to win two five-wicket hauls in World Cups, surpassing a number of other Indian bowlers. The whole list is provided here:

In the 2019 World Cup, Shami's first five-wicket haul came against England.

Shami's dismissal of Will Young also allowed him to break Anil Kumble's ODI World Cup record of 31 wickets taken. With 44 wickets apiece in the competition, Javagal Srinath and Zaheer Khan hold the first two spots on the all-time list of Indian World Cup wicket-takers. Shami now occupies the third spot. Shami now has 36 wickets in the World Cup.

Shami recorded his greatest performance in men's ODI World Cups with final stats of 5/54. His aggregate 5/51 bowling average is still his best in this style.
