Another World Cup match, another lacklustre, lop-sided contest, and another victory for India. The home crowd in Ahmedabad received what they came for on Saturday in front of a virtually full Narendra Modi Stadium, but without much of a fight. With their eighth victory in ODI World Cups, Team India defeated Pakistan with a decisive seven-wicket victory to take the lead in the standings.
The Indian team put up a professional all-around performance, continuing their unstoppable run in the 50-over competition this year. After Pakistan's skipper Babar Azam and opener Mohammad Rizwan put together an 82-run partnership, Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah ignited a horrific collapse in which the team lost seven wickets in the span of 63 balls for 36 runs. All five bowlers each took two wickets in the process. Only 191 runs were needed to collapse Pakistan.
In response, Rohit Sharma maintained his exceptional form and added to his brilliant century against Afghanistan by scoring a second consecutive fifty-plus knock in the Pakistan match. Shreyas Iyer then contributed with his first World Cup half-century as India easily won with 117 balls remaining in the game.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the Indian team for their all-around excellence in the historic win against Pakistan following the victory and wished them success in the remaining World Cup games.
"Team India all the way! A great win today in Ahmedabad, powered by all round excellence. Congratulations to the team and best wishes for the matches ahead,” he posted.
This was the eighth meeting between the two arch-rivals at a men's Cricket World Cup, and the eighth occasion that India won. With both teams having won three straight, the victory puts India on top of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 standings, ahead of New Zealand on net run rate. Despite the unfortunate nature of this loss, Pakistan is still in fourth place and still has a good chance of making it to the semifinals.
