After Mathews timed out, Sri Lanka refused to shake hands with Bangladeshi players

Not only would the World Cup 2023 match between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka take place in the Arun Jaitely Stadium in Delhi, but it would also go down in history as one of the most contentious matches ever. From the first over, there were intense moments in the match between Bangladeshi pacer Tanzim Hasan Sakib and Sri Lankan captain Kusal Mendis, as well as between Charith Asalanka and the Bangladeshi bowlers. However, everything came crashing down when Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews was timed out in the 25th over. In the annals of international cricket, he became the first player to be timed out.

Was the umpiring accurate? What what is the timed out rule? Had Shakib backed down from the appeal? There were many questions, and the discussion went on forever. It was only natural that the Sri Lankan side was quite angry. As coach Chris Silverwood and captain Kusal Mendis watched in shock, Mathews was spotted tossing his gloves and helmet in disdain as he entered the dugout.

Although the umpires clarified the rule, Mathews disagreed. He said that after reaching the crease in the allotted two minutes, his helmet's strap snapped, which is a malfunctioning piece of safety equipment.

When it was Sri Lanka's time to pitch, Shakib was met by a fierce welcome as he went out to bat. When Shakib was ejected, Mathews also waved him off by pointing to his wrist and indicating time out. Long after Bangladesh won the ballgame, there was still anxiety.

*Sri Lanka players refuse handshake after Bangladesh win

The Sri Lankan players shook hands with the umpires and left as soon as Bangladesh gained the winning runs in the 42nd over with leg byes. In the middle, the Bangladeshi batsmen, Tanzim Hasan Sakib and Towhid Hridoy, refused to shake hands. It is customary for the players to greet one another after a cricket match, but they did not queue for that. Without exchanging handshakes, the Sri Lankan players left the pitch. The Bangladeshi side did not make any measures to put out the fire either. But there was hand shaking between the support workers on both sides.

When questioned about Sri Lanka's choice to forgo shaking hands with the Bangladesh players following the game, Mathews said that the latter didn't respect them or the sport, so they shouldn't expect polite conduct in return.

*‘Respect the game to get respect from others’: Mathews

Yes, you should show respect to those who show us respect. They still need to respect the game itself, though. We are all representatives of this magnificent game, including the umpires, after all. What more could you possibly want, he said, if you don't show respect and apply common sense?

Bangladesh eliminated Sri Lanka from the World Cup semifinals. With about nine overs remaining, Bangladesh triumphed by three wickets to conclude a six-match losing run.

With the help of captain Shakib Al Hasan, 82, and batsman Najmul Hossain Shanto, 90, who stuck by his timed out claim against Mathews, the Bangladesh top order eventually clicked, reaching 282-7 in 41.1 overs.

Charith Asalanka's outstanding 108 helped to keep Sri Lanka from being all out for 279 runs. When Mathews removed Shanto and Shakib in back-to-back overs, ending a heated 169-run partnership off 149 balls between the two left-handers from Bangladesh, Mathews' bowling gave Sri Lanka a whiff, but the tailenders held on to see them home.

In the eleventh over, Mathews had the opportunity to remove Shakib on 7, but Asalanka lost a sitter at short extra cover.

When the dew made it hard to handle the wet ball, Shakib and Shanto made their winning stand. They scored quickly before Asalanka, very late in the game, made apologies by holding onto the lead off Shakib's bat.

In his 101-ball innings, Shanto smashed 12 fours before Matthews clean bowled him. Shanto scored an undefeated 59 in Bangladesh's first-ever victory over Afghanistan, but he scored just 28 runs in the next six matches.

Dilshan Madushanka, a left-arm fast bowler, finished with 3-69 to claim the lead in World Cup wickets with 21.

In his return stint, Madushanka dismissed Musfiqur Rahim clean after taking the wickets of both the openers, Tanzid Hasan and Litton Das, during the batting powerplay. However, Towhid Hridoy scored an undefeated fifteen runs, including two sixes, to help Bangladesh win.
